Letter from Fr Jean Luc Bordeau in Haiti to his friend
Fr Ciolin Rothery in Holy Redeemer Parish, Bray.
Haiti, Wednesday 27th January 2010.

Dear Colin...People here are living in fear. Every day there are strong aftershocks that cause panic. People don't know what tomorrow will bring. The population have lost everything. People are wondering what the months to come will be like in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. A week ago I was in Port au Prince. I saw the extent of the damage. It was awful. I saw my family sleeping on the street with everyone else. The whole town smelt of death. Desolation was everywhere. Life in the capital is almost unbearable, and now the provinces are overcrowded with the crowds of people fleeing the capital. Very soon life is going to be very hard for thousands of families. We Oblates of Mary Immaculate lost our Residence and Theology Building. One of our students died in the earthquake. This is a picture of the reality we are living. I ask you to pray for Haiti, that our country may be reborn out of the ruins. We are counting on your prayers and your Christian solidarity. In the name of the People of Haiti, I thank the people of Ireland and in particular the Diocese of Dublin for all that you are doing to come to the aid of my people.
Jean Luc Bordeau, Oblate of Mary Immaculate.

The publication of the Report of the Commission of Investigation into the Archdiocese of Dublin heightens our awareness concerning child protection issues.
We must first consider those who have been directly affected and assure them of our complete support, if needed and when requested.
It is important to remind ourselves that in the Parishes of the Dublin Diocese guidelines in this area are operated to a high standard. The following guidelines apply:
·       Safeguarding Children from the National Board for Safeguarding children in the Catholic Church is the most up to date church policy, and is available at www.safeguardingchildren.ie.

·       The state guidelines Children First apply in all our schools, and guidelines in the Diocese are consistent with state policy. www.dohc.ie/publications/children_first.html.

·       Anyone in the Parish of Kilcullen working with children  -  employees, volunteers and priests  -  are required to participate in Garda Vetting. Details of that process are available at www.dublindiocese.ie.

·       The Child Protection Policy that operates in the Parish of Kilcullen is on display in all Parish premises and is available from the Parish Office, Telephone 480727.

·       In this Parish we have a Child Protection Representative and a Child Protection Team. Our Child Protection Representative is Margaret Walker, Telephone 0877504040.

·       It is of most importance that anyone who may have suffered abuse or who knows of anyone who may have suffered abuse is aware that they can contact the Child Protection Service of the Archdiocese of Dublin at 01 8360314. Their website address is www.cps.dublindiocese.ie.

·       Every effort is made to try and ensure that children participating in all aspects of Parish life are safe and welcome. I encourage everyone to familiarise themselves with the material available to promote best practice in this Parish and in our daily lives.
